David Sterling calls for return of Death Penalty in Arkansas
Republican David Sterling today said he is the only Attorney General candidate who has proposed a constitutional solution to Arkansas’ lethal injection law but, in the meantime, he supports resumption of the use of the electric chair.
“I don’t think the electric chair constitutes cruel and unusual punishment and neither does the United States Supreme Court that has considered this issue repeatedly over several decades. Arkansas law authorizes the use of the electric chair and three out of the last six executions in Virginia have been by electrocution,” noted Sterling.
“The only thing ‘cruel and unusual’ here is the manner in which criminals violently murdered their victims and the suffering the victims’ families have had to endure as politicians and lawyers argue over what kinds of drugs we should use to ‘humanely’ execute the convicted murderers,” said Sterling.
“My opponent wants to make jokes about the death penalty because she does not understand how important this issue is to the families of murder victims. While other candidates argue over the solution, we should carry out these executions consistent with Arkansas law, honor the memory of the victims, and help families bring closure to this chapter in their lives,” Sterling remarked.
